NatureWise Biotech & Medicals Corporation (NBM) was founded in the year 2000 by Dr. CY Huang to develop new drugs from natural sources such as Traditional Chinese medicine and herbal extracts. NBM focuses on diseases that have had no effective treatment and has developed two naturally derived therapies: HDAC inhibitors and propolis. HDAC inhibitors are a type of cutting edge anti-cancer target therapy drug. Propolis are effective for treating neurodegenerative diseases. NBM has also tested some new products in agricultural biotechnology and invented a method to raise extra-large queen bees.

Our Record of Excellence

1. Two time winner of the Gold Award in R&D Innovation at the Taipei Biotech Contest(also known as the Biotech “Oscar Award” in Taiwan)

NBM is the first company in Taiwan developing HDAC inhibitors. Two of these lead compounds received the Gold Award in 2007 and 2011 respectively. One of them, BMX, reacts with HDAC8 specifically. Both in vitro and in vivo studies have shown it to be quite effective against brain and pancreatic cancers.

The compound has many advantages over those HDAC inhibitors approved by FDA. NBM has received over 10 patents from various regions around the world and likely ranks in the top 15 companies receiving patents for HDAC inhibitors.

2. Patented PPLs®

PPLs® are compositions derived from Taiwanese Green Propolis by a proprietary method. Propolis has been found to have many therapeutic properties such as antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer and so on. However, only Taiwanese Green Propolis was found by NBM’s researchers to have potent neurotropic activity and have been patented by NBM.

3. The First New Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) License issued by Taiwan’s Department of Health

After a 5 year endeavor, NBM received the first TCM Certificate ever issued by the Taiwanese Department of Health for its product LipoCol Forte®. LipoCol Forte® went through standard rigorous clinical trials. It validated the effectiveness of TCM for conventional medicine indications. For the first time, it gave doctors who practice conventional medicine a clinically proven TCM treatment for their patients.

NBM plays a critical role in integrating Western and Chinese medicine. Most importantly, NBM has completed the bioavailability and drug interaction studies which are typically difficult for traditional Chinese herbs and botanical remedies to carry out. LipoCol Forte® received the Award for the Commercialization of Technology at a Taipei Biotech Contest and is currently covered by National Insurance Reimbursement System.

4. Developed a Method for Raising Extra-large Queen Bee Larvae

NBM tested HDAC inhibitors for possible applications in the bee industry and made a major discovery. Queen bee larva that are fed an enhanced royal jelly produced by worker bees fed with a special recipe prepared with HDAC inhibitors can grow to a size that is several times larger than that of common larva. The queen bees that mature from this larva are larger than normal with higher reproductive capabilities. These extra-large queen bees have the potential to replenish the bee colonies that were lost from colony collapse disorder (CCD). This is the first time in the world that HDAC inhibitors have been found to affect the growth of honey bees with a magnitude that is rarely seen in the biological world. This new technology will have a major impact on the bee industry and may help lessen the heavy agricultural loss due to CCD world-wide. These results were published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry in 2012.
